Faith
Faith is that which gives us the ability to continue lying to ourselves in the teeth of the evidence.

Negative space
I need to buy an outfit for my niece’s wedding in June, and to avoid running down my meagre savings any further than necessary, I have been keeping a watching brief on the local charity shops.
On Friday afternoon I saw the perfect dress – a sleeveless crimson sheath with low v neck and matching jacket. But, of course, it was just a little too tight for comfort.
Before I saw it, I had no clue what...

The possibility of neighborhoods →
bobulate:
Jay Walljasper on the neighborhood as resource for changing the world:
[T]he age of globalization actually makes neighborhoods more important than ever. Neighborhoods — whether in cities, suburbs or small towns — are the level of social organization at which people interact most regularly and naturally, providing a ready-made forum for tackling serious issues together. Even if the...
The joy of walking →
bobulate:
Leo Babauta on the discoveries of walking:
Today I set out from my house and walked. And walked. I didn’t have a specific destination in mind, but wanted to walk a bit before finding a quiet place to write. So I walked, out of the town where I live and along the tropical, white-sand coastline, to the next town over. As others drove cocooned in their cars, I walked, and emitted nothing...

Good intentions
Life is planned in generalities, but lived in specificities.
Between the two lie the cracks into which good intentions fall.

An illustration of 'the Crystal Space'
Here is part of a blog post I wrote last year, in which I refer to the Crystal Space:
I thought about the Crystal Space again, and felt it opening around me, the threads leading away into the future or futures, the neurones flashing and sparkling in the gaps between the here-and-now and the still-to-be. Wherever I am, I am at the centre, the glittering paths extending infinitely into the gloom...

Conditioned arising →
The Buddhist concept of ‘Dependent Origination’ or ‘Conditioned Arising’ relates to the interactions of cause and effect which create what I think of as ‘the Crystal Space’.

By way of explanation
The Crystal Space requires some explication. It is the n-dimensional space of possibility, the network of cause and effect, where we follow the threads through from all that has gone before to all that might be to come. For me it is a holding place, but one which is open to the possibilities, a sort of node or cross roads where there may be lots of different paths leading into different futures....

Crisis
‘It was my birthday last week’ I said.
‘I would have bought you champagne and taken you to bed’ he said.
So he did, although it was a week late.
‘You’re having a mid-life crisis’ he said, this whipper-snapper twelve years my junior, after he had dabbed wine onto my nipples and licked it off. ‘No one leaves a grade 2 listed Georgian vicarage in a chocolate box village to live in a two bedroom...

By way of introduction
I am a lady in my middle years, living on the outer fringes of the Home Counties.
I am a single lady, a status which I have only recently attained.
I am a mother twice over, and also a grandmother, a status which I have attained even more recently than that of singledom.
I have been told (in the last month) that I am beautiful, sexually exciting, ‘fucking gorgeous’ and that I have a phenomenal...

Challenging
This whole thing seems very counter-intuitive.
Not at all what I’m used to.
And isolating.
Is anybody there?

Begin again
A new cyber-place, a new persona? (or rather, a resurrected one).
I slip and glide between the panes. The windows are open… only a crack…
But then, a crack is all you need.
